Product Description

Our 26.75 x 47.25" organic Stokke baby crib mattress with natural rubber (latex) is safer for your infant to sleep on because it is free of chemicals and toxins that other mattresses carry. The batting and filling in a regular crib mattress is treated with chemicals to make it flame retardant. Those very chemicals that are added as a safety measure are actually hurting our babies. They can seep through the vinyl cover and then be absorbed into your infant’s body and breathed into their respiratory system. This can bring about respiratory concerns, skin rashes, allergic reactions, and the most terrible of all, SIDS.

Combining chemicals with a vinyl covering causes the danger to be even worse. In a study using mice, once the mice were placed on the vinyl covering, they were shown to have a 26% reduction in air flow. We believe that these factors combined have been responsible for a lot of crib deaths. Think about the “Back to Sleep” Campaign that has dramatically reduced the occurrence of SIDS. Crib deaths went from 5,000 a year to 3,000 a year simply by implementing this one vital piece of knowledge. What if the reason that crib deaths were reduced is because the baby’s face was being turned away from directly breathing in those chemical off-gasses? What if the other 3,000 cases of SIDS still occurring are because the chemicals are still being absorbed by the babies’ bodies? We have come to think that’s the case. Not to mention the cases of allergies, sickness, and skin rashes that don’t end in SIDS.

There is a better way, and a much safer way. Our Stokke natural rubber crib mattress is 3" thick. No synthetic materials whatsoever are added to cut costs. Natural rubber is the best support for all people's bone structure, but especially a toddler since children’s bones develop the most during the ages of 2-6 years. Wrapped around the rubber core is organic cotton batting, followed by a thick layer of organic wool. The organic wool is so important because it in itself is a natural flame retardant and meets all the regulations of the Consumer Product Safety Commission without the need for one single chemical. Not even traces of chemical can be found on our wool because it is carded on a private machine that is only used for organic wool. Then the mattress is topped with premium European organic cotton fabric and quilted to organic cotton mattress ticking to prevent shifting. The sides are covered in organic wool to prevent moisture from ruining it. This makes a durable, sturdy mattress that is breathable, safe, and honestly healthy for your baby.

Don't Settle For Just Any Natural Rubber

You can trust that our rubber/latex is pure natural rubber and not mixed with synthetic materials. It is 100% chemical free and routinely tested to be certain that the consumer gets the best quality. Other products you notice that are labeled Natural (Or Organic) Rubber (Or latex) can only be thought to have natural rubber included in it. It does not mean that it is 100% natural rubber or that it is free of chemical elements. In fact, a lot of these are mixed with up to 60% synthetic materials.

How Natural Rubber Is Made:

Natural rubber, (also called latex) comes from tapping rubber trees, or Hevea Brasiliensis. You can find these in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. The latex used in our mattresses usually comes from Sri Lanka. Latex is not the sap of the rubber tree as many people assume. It actually flows from latex ducts just under the bark. To get to the latex, a sharp knife is used to shave a very thin layer off of an intact section of bark. If it is cut too thick or deep there is a possibility of killing the tree. The latex then drips down and is collected into a cup. After collection, the latex is whipped with air to form a foam. The foam is then heated to produce a foam rubber. This material conforms to the shape of your head and body, giving support unlike any other while minimizing pressure on your joints and back. This makes for an even support like no innerspring can give you.

Some Chemicals Used In Other Mattresses And The Reactions They Could Cause:

Formaldehyde - A colorless flammable gas. Low levels can cause irritation of eyes, nose, throat & skin.

Antimony- A silvery white metal found in the earth’s crust. Can irritate eyes and lungs, cause heart and lung problems, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach ulcers.

Arsenic -A naturally occurring element found in the earth's crust. Exposure to lower levels for a long time can cause a discoloration of the skin and the appearance of small corns or warts.

Cadmium - A natural element in the earth’s crust. Cadmium damages the lungs, can cause kidney disease, and may irritate the digestive tract.

PBDE's - Lower brominated PBDE's can affect the hormone levels in the thyroid gland. Certain concentrations can be linked to reproductive and neurological risks.

Keep in mind that particularly infants will be more susceptible to the fumes from these irritants. People with allergies can be affected by TRACES of the irritant. (There is no need to worry that your baby might be allergic to wool. Often when a person reacts to wool, it is the chemicals used in wool that they are reacting to. Natural wool is non-allergenic.) We have to stop and think how these harmful chemicals can affect our newborns with brand new sensitive skin and respiratory systems.
