The batting and filling in a traditional crib mattress is treated with elements to make it fire resistant. Organic Cotton Barrier Cover Keeps dust mites from infesting in your child's crib mattress and leaving their waste. Dust mite waste is known to be a major cause of allergic rhinitis (colds) year round.
Fitted or Flat Wool Puddle Pad. This organic wool puddle pad is expertly felted to keep leaks and spills away from your mattress.
Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Adds softness and comfort to your child's firm mattress. The mattress pad also works with the puddle pad by absorbing the leaks or spills and pulling them away from your baby's skin. Your sheet will also help with this, but is not as effective as the mattress pad.
Here is a short list of compounds that might be added to other mattresses:
Formaldehyde - A colorless flammable gas. Low levels can set off inflamation of eyes, nose, throat & skin.
Antimony- A silvery white metal found in the earth's crust. Can irritate eyes and lungs, cause heart and lung problems, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach ulcers.
Arsenic -A naturally occurring element found on our planet's crust. Exposure to lower levels for a long time can cause a discoloration of the skin and the appearance of small corns or warts.
Cadmium - A natural element in the crust of the planet. Cadmium damages the lungs, can set off kidney disease, and may irritate the digestive tract.
PBDE's - Lower brominated PBDE's can affect the hormone levels in thyroid glands. Selected concentrations can be connected to reproductive and neurological risks.
Keep in mind that chiefly infants will be more susceptible to the fumes from these irritants. People with allergies can be affected by TRACES of the allergen. (There is no need to worry that your baby could possibly be allergic to wool. Regularly when a person reacts to wool, the cause is the chemicals that are added to wool that they are reacting to. Natural wool is non-allergenic.) We have to stop and reflect how these harmful chemicals can affect our infants with brand new sensitive skin and respiratory systems.The top retail website for regular (not organic) crib mattresses was asked to disclose the chemicals in their baby mattresses. They replied that the top layer just under the vinyl contains a fire blocker which provides safety and gentle sleep for the baby.
That fire blocker is actually 7.5% boric acid, which is usedfor killing roaches, and 2.4% antimony, which is most similar to arsenic. In Europe, researchers have found that antimony actually seeps through the vinyl and can be absorbed by a baby's body. They have directly related high antimony levels to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
