After you have made the decision to invest a little more into an organic crib mattress, you want to ensure that you keep it protected from leaks, spills, spit-up, and anything else that could get into it. The absolute best protection will be a wool puddle pad. The reason is because it is felted to keep liquids from penetrating it. They will sit on top in a "puddle", giving the pad it's name. The flat pads will do a great job, but do need to be checked every once in a while to be straightened out. They do stay put pretty well, but seeing as how your baby or toddler will move and shift while he sleeps, there can be occasional shifting of the pad. It does need something on top to soak up the liquid. A sheet can work great, but a mattress pad will be much more absorbent and keep the liquid from making your baby too uncomfortably wet until you get the pads changed. It's really a matter of convenience.

The dust mite cover, (only available for standard crib size), goes on the mattress before the puddle pad or mattress pad and will completely keep out dust mites. Some of our mattresses are dust mite resistant anyway (such as the natural rubber ones) but this will keep them out completely.
