How to Protect Your Organic Crib Mattress

Buying an organic mattress is the best way to ensure your baby is not breathing in toxic chemicals during sleep or naptime. Purchasing a truly organic mattress will cost more as it is a superior product. A quality crib mattress that is properly cared for will last through more than one child. Moving the mattress to a toddler bed can give your child five years or more of healthy sleep before growing out of it.

Because an organic mattress is not waterproof, we recommend using a two-fold system. First, place an organic wool moisture pad over your mattress (soft to the touch, not itchy).  Wool fibers contain a natural repellant to keep liquids from being absorbed. Keeping liquid above the surface allows for easy clean up. Second, place an organic cotton mattress pad on top of the moisture pad.  Natural fabrics like cotton allow for better air circulation which helps remove and absorb body moisture, drawing heat away from the skin and keeping your baby cool and dry. When accidents do occur, the highly absorbent properties of cotton wicks the moisture away from your baby’s skin and reduces the amount of moisture seeping through to your wool pad. This combination will provide optimum effectiveness against stains and diaper leaks and allow you to get the most out of your investment.

It is important to protect your baby’s mattress. Fluids seeping into the mattress will cause odors. Bacteria and fungus can begin to grow ultimately creating health issues and an unsanitary sleep environment.

For our Wool topped mattresses, should an accident occur, simply sponge up with a solution of baking soda and water.

Moisture Pads are machine wash on delicate cycle using cold water; hang indoors to dry (dries fast).
Cotton mattress pads come oversized for shrinkage and are machine wash and dry.

NOTE: If you have purchased one of our Wool Topped Mattresses you will not need to purchase a moisture pad. But a cotton mattress pad is still recommended.
