Organic mattresses are safer for your
baby to sleep on than synthetic or synthetic blends.
When people hear the phrase organic
crib mattress, often their first question is..."What is that?"
Organic food has been well know for years, but an organic mattress?
What is it and why do you need it? The first thing you should know is
how a synthetic crib mattress is made. If its an innerspring you'll
find about 80 cheap coils that are rubbed with toxic oils. The
batting and filling will look something like the material they use to
insulate attics with, and is filled with chemicals to be flame
retardant to meet the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety
Commission. If it is latex you will find a chemical filled hard
synthetic foam core. The outer surface of these mattresses is a vinyl
material to keep the mattress from getting diaper leaks or spit up in
the mattress.
Until recently this was all that was
known to be available for parents to purchase, and no one thought
about how this could be harmful. SIDS research started to indicate
that the chemicals and vinyl in the child's mattress could be
directly related to the cause of the SIDS occurrence. That got
people's attention. It makes a lot of sense if you think about it.
Doctors used to say to lay the baby on their stomachs so that if the
baby spit up, he or she wouldn't get choked. Suddenly there was a
worldwide "Back To Sleep" Campaign strongly urging parents
to place their babies on their backs to sleep. When this advice was
heeded, SIDS cases reduced by fifty percent. What the research didn't
explain well was why it was more likely for a baby
laying on his or her tummy to die of SIDS. We can put two and two
together to see that when a baby is placed face down on a chemical
filled vinyl covered mattress, they are more directly breathing in
the chemical off gasses, and the vinyl can cause a reduction in air
flow. This is clearly a deadly combination. In Europe, researchers
have found specifically antimony, a commonly used chemical flame
retardant, in SIDS victims. This shows proof that antimony and other chemicals can
leach through the vinyl covering and harm the baby. This information
in important in helping to explain the other fifty percent of SIDS
cases that occurred while the baby was sleeping on his or her back.
We're certainly not claiming that all
cases of SIDS definitely came from the mattress, but there is clear
evidence that many of them have. This is senseless and able to be
prevented with the use of an organic mattress. In a one hundred
percent organic crib mattress, the innerspring versions will have
double the amount of coils that a standard synthetic mattress will
contain. The metal used will be strong with an elliptical shape for
less chance of wearing on them too quickly. They will be rubbed down
with tung oil and beeswax rather than toxic oil combinations. The
batting and filling will be made up of organically grown cotton
(without the use of pesticides) and organically processed wool (the
wool is grown on free range sheep fed an organic diet and carded on a
private machine used only for organic wool). The wool is the most
important part, because it in itself is flame retardant and not only
meets but exceeds the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety
Commission for fire resistance.
In the latex models of an organic crib
mattress, natural rubber is collected from rubber tree plants by
tapping them. The latex is then heated and whipped to form a foam
rubber. No synthetic materials or chemicals are needed at all. This
core is wrapped with the organic cotton and wool as well. The natural
rubber is tested to be firm enough for the youngest infants, yet also
is more comfortable to lay on and provides optimum bone structure
support for toddlers age two to six. These are covered the same way
as the innerspring versions as described below.
The outer covering of the natural
organic mattresses is just as important as the filling and batting. We mentioned that the vinyl covering
used on a standard synthetic mattress can reduce air flow. An organic
mattress is covered with breathable and safe quilted organic cotton.
This does leave more of a possibility for leaks and spit up to get
into the mattress, which is why we offer organic wool mattress pads
and puddle pads for protection. These are also made form one hundred
percent cotton and wool, and will fully protect your mattress when
used as directed.
You'll find that many manufacturers are
offering organic baby mattresses these days. But not all of them are
made with one hundred percent pure natural organic materials. The buzz is out, and many manufacturers
are jumping on the organic crib mattress band wagon. You are going to
start seeing major retail chains offering organic crib mattresses
online and in their brick and mortar stores. Before you purchase any
organic crib mattress from anywhere, there are some things you should
know. Not all natural and organic crib mattresses are the same. Some
manufacturers are able to add up to sixty percent of synthetic
materials with the organic materials and still label their product
"natural" or "organic". They will be able to
offer these synthetic blended products at a lower price than those
offering one hundred percent organic mattresses. You need to ask
yourself what would be the point of buying a synthetic blended
mattress. There are still chemicals in it, and those could still
affect your baby adversely.
Before you buy any organic crib or baby
mattress, ask if it is tested. Our manufacturer, Pure Rest & Ecobaby Organics, tests each new
shipment of mattresses that arrives in their warehouse to ensure that
you are getting what we claim you are getting, a one hundred percent
pure organic mattress. If it is found not to be, it will either be
not shipped out in that condition or recalled and replaced. To the left you will also find our
manufacturer's certifications of
the materials that go into these mattresses. Ours are simply the best
you can buy.
Our mattresses can aid in reducing
illnesses like colds, flu, and allergies. Organic wool is an amazing material. It
is not only flame resistant, it is bacteria resistant. So is natural
latex. This means all of our mattresses can help reduce the
likelihood of your baby contracting a cold or the flu. In addition to
this, all natural and organic materials are non allergenic, even wool
and latex. When a person is allergic to wool or latex, it is usually
the chemicals in the wool or latex that they are reacting to.In fact, the general incidence of a
latex allergy for anyone is very low. Less than one percent of the
U.S. population have reported a latex allergy. NONE of these cases
were reported from a natural organic latex. You can have the peace of
mind to know that your baby's mattress is hypo allergenic, anti
microbial, and dust mite resistant. If you'd like to make it dust
mite proof, we also offer a dust mite cover which will completely
eliminate the effects of dust mite dander for your baby.
Natural Latex Is Better Than Memory
Foam. If you're going to buy a natural rubber
or latex mattress for your child, you'll probably want to compare it
to memory foam. Aside from the obvious reason that memory foam is
synthetic and made with toxic chemicals, non toxic natural latex will
not leave a body impression. Natural latex is firm, yet it conforms
to the body which alleviates pressure points and makes for optimum
comfort and bone structure support. This is particularly important
information for two to six year olds due to the fact this age range
is a critical time for bone structure development. So, if you are
purchasing a crib mattress that will be transferred to a toddler bed,
natural latex would be the best choice.
Our Standard Size Crib Mattresses Come
With a Ten Year Warranty. A vinyl covered crib mattress can tear
up very quickly. Often before one child is finished using it, it has
tears in it. Ususally parents remedy this issue by slapping some duct
tape over the tear. For each new birth in the family, you would have
to buy a new mattress, and keep dealing with the duct tape. Our standard size crib mattresses carry
a ten year warrany and are durable enough to last twenty years. You
can pass this down to every new baby in the family. If you don't have
any future children, you can benefit from online auction sites like
Ebay or Craig's list to re-sell the mattress because it will still be
in great condition.
We also offer infant mattresses which
all consist of a natural latex core. All sizes available including
mini co sleeper, bassinet, cradle, porta crib, and even custom if you
can't find the size you are looking for. Now, get free shipping on your entire order (any order) to the continental US.We believe in the purity and safety of
our products and encourage you to make your baby's sleeping
environment absolutely organic.

Are Mattress Manufacturers Purposely Ordering Weak Testing?
When you order an organic crib mattress, it's quite an investment. The cost can be much higher than the chemical filled, vinyl covered counterpart. That's because it costs more to make a quality chemical free mattress. Some manufacturers are now taking advantage of that fact and purposely ordering weak testing so that they can still claim that their product is organic and charge a higher retail price. Ginny at Ecobaby Organics was able to see get a copy of the lab reports done by EcoInstitute for a competitor. (I will not name that competitor, but Ginny does name the competitor in her blog post here). In the lab report, the testing showed that the competitor's so called natural rubber contained toluene and formaldehyde. Read More...
