Why Should I Buy An Organic Crib Or Infant Mattress?

Parents often want to know what is so special about an organic crib or infant mattress. Is it really worth the extra money? Or is it just another play on human emotions to get parents to shell out extra of their hard earned dollars? Here's the truth: it's worth it.

Go into any major retail department store and take a look at the crib mattresses they have available there. Press your hand down on it and feel it. You're going to see and feel a vinyl covering, and depending on how sensitive your sense of smell is, you may even smell the chemical off gasses it produces. What you won't see is the toxic stuffing inside. Toxic? Yes!

These mattresses are treated with chemicals to be fire resistant. In fact, we found that the top selling retail website for regular (not organic) crib mattresses was asked to disclose the chemicals in their baby mattresses. They replied that the top layer just under the vinyl contains a fire blocker which provides safety and gentle sleep for the baby.

That fire blocker is actually 7.5% boric acid, which is used for killing roaches, and 2.4 % antimony, which is most similar to arsenic. In Europe, researchers have found that antimony actually leaches through the vinyl and can be absorbed by a baby’s body. They have directly related high antimony levels to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

So these fire blockers that are meant to protect our babies, are hurting them. The chemicals are not the only problem, either. It's the vinyl. Sure, we know babies have leaky diapers and the vinyl is easy to clean. But it also can reduce the ability to breathe freely. This combination of chemicals and reduced air flow can be deadly. Think about this for a moment, after the "Back To Sleep" campaign was implemented by parents, the occurrence of SIDS was reduced by fifty percent. But have you ever thought about why its so significant that when a baby is turned on his or her back that it would make a difference? What if the reason is because now the babies aren't face down on the vinyl covering (which reduces air flow), and not directly breathing in the chemical off gasses? We believe that is the reason the Back to Sleep campaign is so successful, but we also believe we can do more. Even though babies faces are being turned away, their bodies can still absorb the toxins. Even when this doesn't result in death, it can result in numerous cases of sickness such as colds, fever, etc.

What Sets The Organic Mattress Apart From Others

A truly 100% organic mattress is different from all the rest. Instead of using chemicals for fire resistance, it uses pure organic wool. This meets and exceeds the standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission for fire safety. But that's not all. Only tung oil and beeswax are used to oil the coils on the innersprings (no toxic oils). For the natural rubber mattresses, only pure natural rubber is used, not synthetic blends. Organic cotton grown without the use of pesticides is used for batting. The outer part of the mattress is not vinyl, its a breathable quilted organic cotton. There are other organic options for protecting your mattress from leaky diapers. There's no need for concern that your baby may be allergic to wool or latex. Though its a possibility your baby could be allergic to anything, its not likely that they would be allergic to pure organic wool or pure natural rubber. Its usually the chemicals and synthetic materials used with these that cause allergies. When chemicals and synthetic materials are not present as in our products, there's much less risk of your baby developing an allergy to it. For more information, check out our product pages.

BEWARE OF THE ORGANIC LABEL:

Legally, a company cannot advertise 100% organic if they are not in fact 100%. Many retailers sell "organic" mattresses that are really blends of organic and non-organic materials. They do this to cut corners and make more money off of the consumer for a lesser quality product. You can be sure that all of our mattresses are 100% organic, and are tested as each new shipment comes in.
